Redbarn Residency is an artist-led project based in east cork, Ireland outside the town of Youghal. Creative instigator Richard Forrest lives on the Forrest farm, which has been cultivated by the Forrest family for over 250 years. This project aims to host artists, provide a unique studio workspace and develop a sculpture park.
Underpinning our programme is a belief that art and artists can bring about meaningful change in the world. At Redbarn Residency we aim to commission new artworks, host workshops, curate exhibitions, enable community gatherings and explore a rural environment through a creative lens. Redbarn Residency is nimble, unbureaucratic and open to connecting with like minded individuals and organizations.
Key to Redbarn Residency will be the creation of a sculpture park. Farming is a physical act where people have sought to mold the landscape to their vision. In this park where the beach meets farmland, our creative approach will be to respond to the land by thinking about light, space, climate change and ecology. Positioned beside a popular beach where public meets private, people will experience artworks in a way which is radically different from urban creative locations.
Forrest Farm is a working dairy farm with large areas of grassland, marshland which is a proposed area of european conservation, a beach dune and farm yard.
Conservation, biodiversity and environmental concerns are core to this project with an aim to develop projects which promote the flourishing of native ecological systems.
Visiting artists and volunteers will be essential to advancing this project, with each individual bringing in their own set of skills, experience and insights.
We aim to have two visitor bedrooms, a large sculpture workshop and a portable studio. The studio will be constructed on top of a trailer, using a tractor it will move between four locations on the farm: grassland, farm yard, marsh and beach dune. This structure will be multi functional with the option of using it as a studio, community workshop space or gallery. The large workshop will be located beside the house and will be a renovated farm shed. This structure is 100 sq meters and will house multiple areas for wet, wood and metal working. Renovation of this structure will begin in late 2022 with the construction of the studio following this.
