Richard Forrest // Laura McMorrow // Caroline McNally // Jillian McAteer Exhibition runs from 12th April to 11th May 2013 Preview from 7pm to 9pm Thursday 11th April 7/8 Rutland Street, Limerick Gallery open from 12-5, Tuesday - Friday (10-6 Saturday) Occupy Space and Stag & Deer present works by Richard Forrest, Laura McMorrow, Caroline McNally and Jillian McAteer. Taking lens-based media as a starting point, Occupy Space have developed a curatorial collaboration with Stag & Deer, an exhibition-making partnership based in Cork. Both Occupy Space and Stag & Deer are non-profit organisations with a history of utilising slack spaces, multiple sites and temporary venues to house exhibitions of contemporary visual art. We share a common objective on this particular project which positions lens-based artists firmly within the remit of contemporary visual arts practice. The selected artists use a range of approaches, incorporating multi-disciplinary practices that speak to the process of making in relation to lens-based media. Photography, film, performance and installation combine, inviting the audience to explore the ideas of perception and the human experience of seeing which underpin concepts at play within the individual artworks. On this occasion we are using two slack spaces to exhibit the works, they are located side-by-side at 7/8 Rutland Street. We would like to acknowledge the support of Limerick City Council for permitting access to the spaces which had formally been earmarked as part of 'The Opera Centre' development. Occupy Space: Noelle Collins & Orlaith Treacy Stag & Deer: Pamela Condell & Pádraig Spillane Ive been dividing my time between making work for upcoming shows and writing proposals. Not too sure how good I am at multitasking although when deadlines arrive one has to rise to the challenge. Im having great fun in the studio creating work for my upcoming solo show 'Sensorium' and have a few interesting ideas where to go after that. Snowballing ideas. Upcoming shows: April: Group show in Limerick May: Group show in Dublin June: Solo show in Waterford BRING IT ON Thanks to everyone at Occupy Space and all who were either involved or came along to 'Taking Place'. This weekend was packed full of screenings, music, theater and two talks. I really enjoyed discussing my work with all those in attendance and thought there was a fantastic relaxed atmosphere. " Occupy Space provides a platform for local, national and international artists, welcoming a diverse range of practices and promoting Limerick as a hub for contemporary visual art. Occupy Space is a not-for-profit organization that has established a dynamic programme of exhibitions and events to engage the local audience and to open up a critical dialogue with the wider visual art community. The fundamental objective of the organization is to provide exhibition opportunities for graduate and emerging artists outside of the context of a commercial gallery space. Occupy Space is operated by a voluntary staff, providing experience in event management, facilitating exhibitions and developing potential for independent curatorial projects." This weekend issue 8 of Occupy Paper was launched and 'WOW' does it look fantastic!! If the content is as good as the design then this will be a a gem to have. |
